THE STATE PHILARMONIC OF SIBIU
The Symphony Orchestra of the Sibiu Philarmonic has its seat in one of the most important cultural centres of Romania, the city of Sibiu. this eight hundred year old.
Southern Transylvanian city has long been an economic and spiritual meeting-place. Inhabitedby Romanians and Saxon (Germans), Sibiu has always had an important place in the cultural life of Romania. For centuries musical events have been an important part of the life of the community, as shown by numerous documents. In the 16 Century, Sibiu had one of the first organ schools in Europe, founded by Heronymus Ostermaver and city archives have many music-sheets signed by 17 and 18 Century composers and organists like Ion Caianu, Valentin Greef-Bakfark or Petrus Schimert (who was J. S. Bach's pupil) whose output was comparable to the European level of the time.
In 1774 a series of concerts was started at the residence of Baron Samuel Brukenthal, governor of Transylvania; the professional orchestra was comparable to any of Western Europe.
"The Abduction from the Seraglio" was presented ^n Sibiu in 1792, scarcely a year from Mozart's death; in 1800. J. Haydn' s oratoriu "The Creation" was presented.
These are convincing proofs of the musical potential of Sibiu at that time.
Throughout the 19- th century great European musicians came to Sibiu:
Franz Liszt,
Johann Strauss,
Johannes Brahms,
Joseph Joachim,
Richard Strauss.
There was a sustained musical activity, supported by many Romanian and German cultural societies right up to W.W.II. On January, 1, 1949 the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Sibiu was founded, motivated by the existance of large number of musicians and of a Conservatory as well as a long tradition performing symphonic and opera music.
Throughout its 49 years of activity as a professional symphony orchestra it gave thousands of concerts of symphonic and opera music as well as its long experience, the Sibiu Philharmonic is regarded as one of the best in Romania; accordingly, in 1983 and 1985 it was awarded first prize it the competition of professional symphony orchestras.
Many reviews in Romanian and foreign publications witness to the high musical proficiency of the Sibiu Philharmonic.
Many thousands of minutes of radio and TV recordings, records, tours in the country and abrouad: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia etc.
The Philharmonic of Sibiu was joined in its concrets by many Romanian and foreign musicians, of whom we mention: Ion Voicu, Valentin Gheorghiu (Romania), Monique de la Bruchollerie and Jean Jacques Thiolier (France), Sviatoslav Richter, Rudolf Kerer, Lazar Berman, Dimitri Bashkirov, Alexandr Demidenko (Russia), Ivry Gittlis (Switzerland), Montserrat Caballe (Spain) etc.
The Sibiu Philharmonic ist open to offers collaboration with musical agencies, musical societies and cultural institutions from all over the world, guaranteeing musical performances of a high artistic level.
